Dissolved oxygen
The amount of oxygen held in water, measured in milligrams per litre, which fish need to breathe and which falls in warm, still or crowded conditions.
Recirculating aquaculture system
A land based system that filters and reuses water to grow fish in tanks, relying on pumps, biofilters, oxygenation and alarms.
Feed conversion ratio
The kilograms of feed used to produce one kilogram of fish, a key measure of farm efficiency and feed waste.
Withholding period
The time after a veterinary treatment during which stock must not be harvested for human consumption.
Critical control point
A step in processing, such as cooking, chilling or metal detection, where control is essential to prevent a food safety hazard and where monitoring is recorded.
Batch code
The identifier applied to a processed batch that links it to its input lots, date, line and destination for traceability.
Bycatch reduction device
A grid or panel fitted to trawl gear that lets turtles, large animals and unwanted fish escape.
Berried female
A female lobster carrying eggs, which must be returned to the water alive under fisheries rules.
Harvest area status
Whether a shellfish growing area is open or closed for harvest under the shellfish quality assurance program, based on water testing.
Ice slurry
A mix of ice and seawater used to chill harvested fish rapidly to the core temperature required by the food safety program.
