Chemicals and Treatments Register

Purpose. The controlled list of cleaning chemicals, sanitisers, fuels, refrigerants, veterinary treatments and stock health products held at each site, with safety data sheets, protective equipment, storage and withholding periods.

1.Scope

This register lists every chemical held at the sea farm, hatchery, plant, distribution centre and on vessels, including detergents, sanitisers, chlorine, hydrogen peroxide, formalin, anaesthetics, antifoulants, fuels, oils and refrigerants, and every veterinary treatment authorised under the health plan. Each entry has an owner and the location of its safety data sheet.

2.Entry requirements

Each entry records the product, supplier, hazard classification from the safety data sheet, quantity and storage location, protective equipment required, first aid, spill response, disposal method and, for stock treatments, the veterinary authorisation, dose and withholding period. Safety data sheets must be less than five years old and available at the point of use.

3.Stock treatments

Treatments must only be used on the written direction of the consulting veterinarian, recorded with the cage or tank, date, dose, batch and the withholding period end date. The Quality and Food Safety Coordinator must check the register before approving any harvest plan.

4.Storage

Chemicals must be stored in the labelled bunded cabinets or stores, segregated by class, in original containers, away from feed and product, with spill kits at hand. Fuel on vessels and farm boats must be stored and transferred to the refuelling procedure.

5.Review

The register must be reviewed every six months and whenever a chemical is added or removed. New chemicals must have a risk assessment approved before first use.

6.Current summary

The register currently holds thirty-one cleaning and sanitation products, nine fuels, oils and refrigerants, four antifoulant and net treatment products, and six veterinary treatments, across five sites and nine vessels.
